Who is using the film?

These Girls Are Missing was commissioned by FAWE, The Forum for African Women Educationalists, to premiere at the United Nations’ 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women. From Beijing, These Girls moved across continents to spur discussion among those directly involved with the issue of girls’ education -- from government Ministers to village elders to families themselves. The film has promoted debate among field workers and policy makers both North and South about why the gender gap exists in African education and how to overcome it.

The film has been widely distributed by the Ministries of Education in both Guinea and Malawi for use in workshops and focus groups promoting girls’ education. The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) has also distributed the film to its associate members in Ministries of Education in Namibia, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya, Senegal, Uganda, Zanzibar, Botswana, Mozambique, Mauritius, Seychelles, Cameroon, Ghana, and São Tomé e Principe.

International agencies, including UNICEF, USAID, and the Peace Corps have made extensive use of These Girls Are Missing as a tool for training and education. Most recently, the Peace Corps created a digitized version of the film that will be available at international posts for free distribution to Volunteers and Peace Corps staff who have been invited to work with local communities, NGOs and other organizations in partner countries. The CD will also be used for training host country counterparts of the Volunteers.
